Wooden Horse from the Lost Nation Photographs

What strikes me about compelling artwork is the passion that lies within it. Like great music, it must hold some brand of magical mystery . . soulful honesty.

My work reflects my life. Small town carnivals, abandoned houses, gravel roads, broken down little towns. I find it everywhere I go, not just here in Iowa. Robert Frank said that he wanted to describe what it felt like to drive into "the sad American night". It is the antithesis of the shiny new America we see on T.V. and in our media. It is a side of life that not everyone knows about, nor cares to. I love the oddness of life, its beauty and its honesty. I take photographs because I am drawn to the spirit, hope and hopelessness of life.

Fine Art Photography

When I was a young girl, I had my Dad's Brownie camera. Farm cats (Tiger, Old Yeller, Trixie and more) were dressed up in my doll clothes and had their portraits taken. My cousins had their portraits taken when they visited us, too. Looking back, I see that I was training for the portrait photography business I would eventually have.

Art work. In the late 1980's, I began to take my personal work as a photographer more seriously. The Lost Nation Series began sometime during that time. I was in school at the University of Iowa and I was studying art. The work has been coming ever since. It is a way of seeing the world and at the same time connecting with it. My background in professional photography (portraits and weddings) has given me a strong foundation on which to expand. Each area of my photography informs the other.

Exhibitions are one way of sharing my work. Having my images on CDs and book covers are another. I hope that my photographs hold something of the world and of myself. They are my means of expressing myself, sharing ideas and way of seeing. Of all my work, it is this work that I am closest to.

My photographs can be purchased individually or as a group for an office or public space. Commissioned work can also be arranged.
